Helio dying a slow death

We'll be honest with you -- it's a bit disheartening to watch the
(seemingly) inevitable happen to Helio. After all, it's managed to
soldier on despite hordes of other MVNOs hanging it up here in the US
of A. Nevertheless, data gleaned from EarthLink's most recent annual
report shed some light on its deteriorating situation. Reportedly,
Helio's net loss "widened by 41.3-percent to $326.6 million in 2007
compared to $191.8 million in 2006," yet revenues managed to grow
267-percent to $171 million from $46.6 million the year prior and
subscriber growth rose 28-percent over last quarter to 180,000. Add
those figures to the $42 or so million it lost in 2005, and we're up to
a grand total just south of 560 million American dollars. Tough times,
indeed.

Apple Ships Time Capsule

Announced during Macworld Conference & Expo in January, Apple confirmed on Thursday the company began shipping its hardware backup tool, Time Capsule. Notifications of the shipments began reaching customers that pre-ordered the device early this morning.

Time Capsule is the hardware companion to Time Machine, Apple’s automatic backup tool that was introduced as part of Mac OS X Leopard. Time Capsule combines an 802.11n network access point and a hard disk drive — in fact, the device is a full AirPort Extreme base station.

Time Capsule features dual-band antennas for 2.4GHz or 5GHz frequencies. It has one USB 2.0, one Gigabit Ethernet, and three Gigabit LAN ports. The device also has a built-in power supply and can connect to print wirelessly from a USB printer, according to Apple. In addition, Time Machine offers Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA/WPA-2), 128-bit WEP encryption and a built-in NAT firewall that support NAT-PMP for Leopard’s Back to My Mac feature.

Palm leaves the airports, BlackBerry moves in | BlackBerry Cool

Palm leaves the airports, BlackBerry moves in

Palm’s logo. Impress it upon your memory ere it fades.Palm recently announced that they would be closing all their retails stores. While there was some initial confusion, it was eventually determined that only the seven stores located in malls would be closed. The remaining 26 airport stores are owned and operated by Airport Wireless which, until this closure, had a tight partnership with Palm. The stores will remain open, but the company is broadening their reach by adding new devices and accessories including, of course, the BlackBerry. While the company is in talks with Palm to continue having their devices in the stores, at the moment the decision is up in the air. RIM’s been starting to get more involved in the retail side of things, so this is the perfect opportunity to edge into Palm’s spot, especially considering Palm’s OS delay and 43% profit drop last year, and not to mention the whole Foleo debacle.
